How the festival is celebrated in Bengaluru
Gowri and Ganesha idols are purchased by people and worshipped in their homes , commercial shops etc. These idols are made out of mainly clay , some with white cement. The idols come in different colors , some without colorings. Usually the idols are immersed in rivers , lakes , ponds etc after the pooja &
festival celebrations are over. The colors used in the idols may contaminate the water , hence environmental friendly idols without color may be seen nowadays. The idols come in different shapes , sizes to fit the people requirement.
Many societies , youth associations celebrate this festival in streets & on the road sides . Cultural programs , orchestras for music & recreation activities are conducted. Schools , colleges , public & private offices remain closed on this eve and people enjoy with their family celebrating the festival and participating in the programs.
On this auspicious day, special poojas , homas and alankaras are conducted in Ganesha temples. These temples would remian crowded throughout the day. One may have to wait in queue awaiting darshan for long time on these days !
The pooja vratha or process involves establishing the idol , abhisheka , alankara and chanting ganesha sthothras. Later before visarjana , stories of ganesha & importance of this festival are read by the head of family which is the most interesting part of the vratha also.At homes some people worship the idol for
one day and later disperse (visarjana) the idol to water on the same day. Some keep it for 2 days and some even for 3 days.
