In one of our picnic visits from Bengaluru to Kerala, we got a chance to pass via Kodanad - a rural district which is about 40 to 50 kms from east of Kochi. This place is known for its training of elephants for many years and attracts tourists .
Kodanad was very famous for the Elephant capturing and training. Elephant capturing started in Malayattor reserved forests in 1895 and a kraal was erected during that time , its a place where the newly captured elephants are kept till they are properly trained for employment in forestry works. The present 6 room kraal has been constructed in 1965 at the place where the old kraal existed . Captured elephants are kept in this kraal till they are properly trained and disciplined for forestry and other works. Few animals and birds - spotted deers , chimps , peacocks were adopted at this spot which were later moved to a different region.
If you happen to visit Kerala for a picnic , do not miss this spot - A very nice spot to check out how forest elephants are trained. Do visit this spot and share your experiences.
