It was established in Bangalore during 1865 , in Greeco Roman Style and is one of the oldest museums in India. Dr.Edward Green Balfour was the first officer in charge of the museum. It started functioning in a temporary building at Museum road , and was later shifted to a new building specifically designed for museum during 1877 on Sydney Road , which is now Kasturba Road.

It has a rich collection and display of archaeological objects , stone sculptures dating back to 16th century , bronzes , traditional paintings , Indian and Western coins , earliest Kannada Halmidi inscription , copper plate records , arms and Armour , Wooden carvings , Musical Instruments etc
There is a minimal entry fee of Rs.4 to this museum and Venkatappa Art Gallery which is behind this museum. If you happen to visit to Cubbon Park , don't miss to spend few hours visiting this museum and indulge your mind with some mind blowing historic collections. Museum is open on all days from 11.00 AM to 05.PM except on government holidays. Do visit and share your experience.
