We were getting ready to go to bed when my 7 year old daughter said in a calm tone, "Mamma tomorrow is my IEO (English Olympiad ) Exam".
It was 10.30pm.
She was unwell the last week,
so we didn't practice and
on the weekend I was busy with work.
Amidst all this we forgot about the exam.
Now the mother in me wanted to react...
I wanted to give my daughter a lecture, maybe like this...
"What?? You're telling me now,
why didn't you remind me earlier.
Why did you go to play?
Why didn't you study?
How can you forget?
You're so careless.
You can't even remember your exam dates"
*I could have done that and maybe that's the easiest way to express OUR anxiety*

_BUT I chose to Respond._
I said, "Hmm both Mamma and My Little Girl Forgot about it.
Sometimes we do forget things.
Now we can sit for quick 15 minutes
and
you can ask me any doubts you have."
She quickly brought her IEO workbook and the next 15 minutes we were engrossed in solving the paper.
What surprised me was the way the things went smoothly and today morning she even solved one more paper.
All this happened because as a parent I chose to Respond.

ಹಣತೆ ” ನನ್ನಿಂದ ದೀಪ ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ ಆ ಬೆಳಕು ನನ್ನದು ” ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿತು.
ಇದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಹಣತೆಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಎಣ್ಣೆ ” ನಾನು ಆ ದೀಪಕ್ಕೆ ಜೀವಾಳ.ನಾನೇ ಇರದಿದ್ದರೆ ದೀಪವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಬೆಳಕೂ ಇಲ್ಲ ಅದಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಆ ಬೆಳಕು ನನಗೆ ಸೇರಿದ್ದು” ಎಂದಿತು.
ಇದನ್ನು ಕೇಳಿದ ಬತ್ತಿ ” Hello! ನಾನು ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವದಿಂದಲೇ ದೀಪ ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ logically ಬೆಳಕು ನನ್ನದು “ಎಂದಿತು.
ಈ ಕಚ್ಚಾಟವನ್ನು ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮದಿಂದಲೇ ನೋಡುತಿದ್ದ ಗಾಳಿ ” ನಾನು ಇಲ್ಲದೇ ದೀಪವು ಉರಿಯಲ್ಲ , ನಾನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಾದರೆ ದೀಪ ಆರಿಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಬೆಳಕು ನನ್ನದು” ಎಂದು ವಾದಿಸಿತು.
ನಾನು ನನ್ನಿಂದ ಎಂಬ ಕಚ್ಚಾಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಣತೆ ಹೊಡೆದು ಹೋಯಿತು. ಎಣ್ಣೆ ಹರಿದು ಹೋಯಿತು. ಬತ್ತಿಗೆ ಎಣ್ಣೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕುಗ್ಗಿ ಹೋಯಿತು. ಗಾಳಿ ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಬೀಸಿ ಉರಿಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದೀಪ ಆರಿಹೋಯಿತು !

ಧೂಳು ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದ ನೋಟನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆ ಎತ್ತಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ‘ಈಗಲೂ ಈ ನೋಟು ಬೇಕೆ?’ ಎಂದರು. ಎಲ್ಲರೂ ಹೌದೆಂದರು.
‘ನಾನೀಗ ನಿಮಗೆ ಜೀವನದ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಹೇಳಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ನೀವು ನೋಟನ್ನು ಮಡಚಿದರೂ, ಮುದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ, ಧೂಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕಿ ತುಳಿದರೂ ಅದರ ಬೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸವಾಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ನೋಟಿಗಿರುವ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಮೊದಲೂ 100 ರು. ಇತ್ತು, ಈಗಲೂ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಇದೆ. ಜೀವನವೂ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಈ ನೋಟಿನಂತೆ. ಕಷ್ಟಗಳು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಮುದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ, ತುಳಿಯುತ್ತವೆ, ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ಹೊಸಕಿಯೇ ಹಾಕಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಹಾಗಾದಾಗ ನಾವು ಕುಸಿದು ಬಿಡುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಕೆಟ್ಟ ನಿರ್ಧಾರಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ. ನಾನು ಅಪ್ರಯೋಜಕ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವನೆ ಮೂಡಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ನೆನಪಿರಲಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನದ ಮೌಲ್ಯ ಕುಂದಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

*ಮೇಷ್ಟ್ರು ಇದ್ದಕ್ಕಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಇಟ್ಟು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಬಿಳಿಹಾಳೆಗಳನ್ನು* *ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಆ ಬಿಳಿ ಹಾಳೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಏನು ಕಾಣಿಸುತ್ತದೆಯೋ ಅದೇ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರ* *ಹಾಳೆಯ ಮೇಲೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ಸಣ್ಣ ಚುಕ್ಕೆ ಇತ್ತು. ಒಬ್ಬೊಬ್ಬರೂ ಒಂದೊಂದು ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಚುಕ್ಕೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಬಂದಂತೆ ಬರೆದರು.*

*ಹಾಳೆಯು ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛ ಬಿಳಿ* *ಬಣ್ಣದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದರೂ ಆ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಪ್ಪು ಚುಕ್ಕೆಯನ್ನೇ ಏಕೆ* *ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿರಿ ? ಮಕ್ಕಳೆಲ್ಲಾ ಮೌನ* . . . .
*ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಈ ಪ್ರಪಂಚವೇ ಹಾಗೆ*
